The Denver Broncos were crushed by the New England Patriots last week, and it seemed odd that the team didn’t use tight end Julius Thomas more. Ever since Peyton Manning came to the Broncos, Thomas has been a favorite target and one of the best at his position in the league.
Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase said Thursday they have a plan to get Thomas more involved going forward, and he offer an explanation of why Thomas didn’t play a bigger role in that loss, in short, to help cover absence of Virgil Green.
“Probably stop using him in protection,” Adam Gase said, via the Denver Post. “We had to use him a little bit more to help our line situation and take a little bit off the running backs and, obviously as you saw in that game, we got hammered pretty good by those two linebackers and we had to make some adjustments during the game, and part of that was keeping (Thomas) in protection. I know that’s not ideal since he’s one of our better players at a skill position, but we’ll figure out some ways to help our protection and make sure he’s still a big impact player for our offense.”
