The Cleveland Cavaliers are regarded by many, including the folks in Las Vegas, as the clear favorite to win the NBA title this season. With LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love teaming up, there likely isn’t a more talented roster in the league.

That’s why it is no surprise that several analysts lost their minds after the Cavaliers got off to a 1-3 start (they beat the Denver Nuggets Friday night to improve to 2-3). Daivd Pick of Basketball Insiders tried to explain their early struggles.

“David Blatt’s debut week in the NBA hasn’t lived up to the off-season hype,” writes Pick. “Instead of bullying opponents en route to the top seed in the East, the Cavs are setting negative all-time records. LeBron has been struggling, Kyrie isn’t in sync, and Kevin Love is spending the bulk of his minutes beyond the arc. A glimpse at Love’s stats from last season reveal that he grabbed DOUBLE the amount of offensive boards and shot 400+ times more from 2-point range than he did from the perimeter. With Love currently attempting so many 3-balls, the Cavs lack his skills to crash the boards, especially on offense. Still, as LeBron recently tweeted, “RELAX”.”

Pick believes the answer may be to acquire a pass-first point guard.

“I think the Cavaliers need a pass-first point guard and one who specializes on the defensive end – free agent Gal Mekel comes to mind as a natural fit,” Pick explained.

Getting a solid defensive, pass-first player like Mekel to come off of the bench seems like a fine idea. However, there are many who believe Kyrie Irving and his need to dominate the ball is the problem.
