Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt said he was pleased with how guard Dion Waiters performed in his role off the bench.

LeBron James expected an adjustment and has preached patience as this new Cleveland Cavaliers team and big three gels. We knew there would be changes throughout the season as NBA rookie head coach David Blatt tinkered with his rotations.

After starting the first three games of the season, Dion Waiters came off the bench in the Cavs game against the Denver Nuggets Friday night.

Waiters scored 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting in 24 minutes as the team’s sixth man. Happy with his performance, it looks like Blatt will continue to bring Waiters off the bench.

After the game, LeBron James talked about how he liked how Waiters played in his new role. Via Chris Haynes for Cleveland.com.

“For the best of the team, that should be Dion’s role,” James said. “Dion comes off the bench and brings us that scoring mentality but more than that, he brings us another defender off the bench, which we need. Someone that’s tough, someone that can guard one through three. It’s a new role, but it’s a good role for him.”

Even though Waiters prefers to start, the sixth man role suits him much better. Coming off the bench allows him to be the lead scorer of the second unit, as opposed to trying to share the rock along with Kyrie Irving, LeBron and Kevin Love.

Waiters’ best attribute is his scoring, and this role allows him to do what he does best more often. For now, it looks like Waiters is the Cavs sixth man.
