After a turbulent Saturday in the College Football Playoff rankings, ESPN’s College GameDay will be in Tuscaloosa, Ala., next week for a huge SEC showdown.

No. 1 Mississippi State survived its November scrimmage with Tennessee-Martin on Saturday, while Alabama—No. 4 in The Associated Press poll last week and No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings—is coming off a huge overtime win at LSU.

Given that those two teams meet in a showdown in both the SEC West and the CFP picture, ESPN’s College GameDay will be setting up shop in Tuscaloosa, Ala., next Saturday in advance of the battle between the unbeaten Bulldogs and the one-loss Crimson Tide.

Auburn—ranked No. 3 in the CFP rankings a week ago—was upset at home by Texas A&M Saturday, meaning Alabama could/should make the move up into the top four when the new rankings come out on Tuesday.

So that sets up perhaps the biggest game in the history of the Mississippi State program.

Alabama has sort of dominated the all-time series with the Bulldogs—if you define “sort of” as a 77-18-3 advantage. The Tide has rolled to six straight wins in the series and Mississippi State is 9-41-1 all-time in Tuscaloosa.

The Bulldogs’ last win at Alabama came in 2006, a 24-16 decision, and coach Dan Mullen is 0-5 against the Crimson Tide since arriving in Starkville in 2009.

Mississippi State (9-0) is one win away from an all-time program record for wins—the Bulldogs were 10-2 in 1999 and 10-0-1 in 1940. They shared the SEC West title in 1998, the program’s only appearance in the SEC championship game.
