The Columbus Blue Jackets have struggled out of the gate this season.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are not the worst team in the NHL, but they are fast approaching that title.

The franchise, originally favored to be a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference, has fallen in their past eight consecutive games. With only nine points so far this season, the only team with a worse record so far is the Buffalo Sabres– even the Carolina Hurricanes, who went winless for the entire month of October, have passed the Blue Jackets up.

The Columbus franchise cannot fully attribute their losses to poor play. A horrendous spurt of injuries to start off the season left the team’s roster depleted, with nine starting players placed on injured reserve before Halloween even hit.

As the players start to return, though, the winning hasn’t- and with this most recent fall to the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night, the team may be getting desperate.

According to NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, the players held a players-only meeting after the game; with netminder Anton Forsberg getting yanked after the first period (with four goals allowed in the first twenty minutes), the team needs to figure out a way to step it up. They’re heading into a nice break- they don’t play the Washington Capitals until Tuesday night, then get to face off against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday- but those two easy (and spaced apart) games will be followed up by a one-two-three punch of San Jose, Detroit, and Boston. The team needs to figure out how to win, or they’re in for an even worse end to November.
