The Denver Broncos are reportedly in talks to sign cornerback Chris Harris to a contract extension.

In 2011, the Denver Broncos gave cornerback Chris Harris a $2,000 signing bonus. The former undrafted free agent can soon expect to make that much in less than a half of one NFL game, thanks to his strong play since then. Thanks to a great run as the team’s nickel back, then the no. 2 cornerback, it appears Harris is on the verge of getting paid, per recent reports tying him and the team to contract talks.

The Denver Post reports that the Broncos have opened contract extension talks with Harris’ camp. As one of the lynchpins in the Denver secondary since the twilight years of Champ Bailey, Harris made a name for himself on the team and now will soon make a name for himself on the bank ledger.

Remember when Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers nearly stole the divisional playoff game from the Broncos last year? That’s because Harris partially tore his ACL in the game and was replaced by Quintin Jammer, who was immediately torched by the Chargers.

Now Harris sits in position to ask for a deal comparable to his ranking among cornerbacks, which Pro Football Focus puts near the top of the list. Harris currently ranks third in the league in pass deflections (11) and opponent quarterback rating (41.4) and is arguably the best no. 2 cornerback in the league, which could put him in line with deals given to Sam Shields, Vontae Davis, and others who have secured upward of $8-$9 million per year with handsome contract guarantees.

The inevitable demands of Harris could slow down talks during the season, but expect the Broncos to do everything they can to fit Harris in what will surely soon be a crowded cap situation in Denver.
