The Houston Texans are not going to be winning much this season but they’re desperately trying to figure out their quarterback situation for the future.

When the Houston Texans didn’t draft a quarterback with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, there were a lot of questions about who would be the long term answer at the position. Ryan Fitzpatrick was never going to be that guy, but the acquisition of Ryan Mallett has made things interesting.

Tom Savage being drafted out of Pitt was interesting too, as it gives the Texans a potential steal for a franchise quarterback should Mallett not work out. The only thing is, Mallett is the starter coming off the Texans bye week meaning Tom Savage is going to have to take a backseat even longer.

According to ESPN.com’s Tania Ganguli, the Houston Texans will be eyeing Tom Savage to start if Ryan Mallett fails to impress as a starter in his audition starting next week.

"The point of starting Ryan Mallett now is to see what he can do. If he lights it up and leads the Texans into the playoffs, he’ll earn himself a real starting quarterback job (and contract). On the other hand, if the Texans don’t see a future with Mallett, it’s likely they’ll turn to Savage to see where he is."

Considering they’re likely to have a high draft pick again, with quarterbacks like Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston likely to be available at the top of the order, Houston trying to figure out their quarterback situation makes a lot of sense. Savage won’t be cut if he underperforms, but he has as much riding on the rest of this season as Ryan Mallett does.
