The blue liner, traded by the Boston Bruins for multiple draft picks as a salary dump prior to the start of the season, has led the Islanders in average ice time (21:57) in the first month and a half of games. He’s also scored two goals and racked up two assists for his new team, making him as valuable on offense as he is for the team’s home ice.
He went down during the team’s 2-1 shootout win over the Los Angeles Kings, when a collision with Kings’ Kyle Clifford knocked Boychuk off his feet. He was clearly favoring his leg as he skated off the ice, but finished up the game with the team.
He opted not to play in the team’s 1-0 victory over the Arizona Coyotes Saturday night, with Brian Strait taking his place in the lineup. As a result, he will be examined for injury in New York on Sunday. Once the team knows the extent of any lower body damage he has suffered, they will likely make an announcement.
Boychuk, 30, finished last season in Boston with 5 goals, 18 assists, and a monstrous +31 rating. Should he be out for an extended period of time, it’s likely that the Islanders could suffer.
