During the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 4-3 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night, Leafs winger Daniel Winnik sustained a head injury after falling awkwardly off a hit from Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda.
Winnik didn’t move on the ice for the first couple of minutes following the hit, and was taken off on a stretcher after a while. Head coach Randy Carlyle had initially insisted that the forward was fine, but held him out of the team’s 5-4 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday night and has stated that the team will be following concussion protocol heading forward.
With the team’s announcement that Winnik has indeed suffered a concussion, this will make the second concussion league-wide this week alone. Forward Zach Parise, alternate captain of the Minnesota Wild, is also out indefinitely with a head injury that has been diagnosed as a concussion.
The Leafs will play Peter Holland on Sunday night against the Ottawa Senators, although he was unable to play the entire game Saturday night. The team has also recalled Trevor Smith from the AHL Toronto Marlies as a precautionary measure for the game.
