The Montreal Canadiens retired jersey number 5 on Saturday night, in honor of Guy LaPointe

On Saturday night, the Canadiens did more than host the Minnesota Wild in a 4-1 victory- they fit in a jersey retirement, too.

In a ceremony held before the puck drop at the Bell Centre, the jersey number of famed defenseman Guy LaPointe was raised to the rafters, where it will now sit nestled in among- well, seventeen other retired numbers. LaPointe was the third and final member of the 1970’s blue liner trio The Big Three to receive the honor, as the team retired Serge Savard’s number (18) in 2006 and Larry Robinson’s number (19) in 2007.

The ceremony has been in the works since June, when team owner Geoff Molson told LaPointe about the honor. All of the Canadiens skaters arrived to their bench that night wearing No. 5 jerseys, which they left on for the ceremony before donning their own numbers.

Although the ceremony was moving and the defenseman was happily reduced to tears, fans haven’t been able to help but take a couple jabs at the Original Six franchise for the number of jersey numbers they now have retired.
