A plane flew with a banner that ‘Jets Rebuilding Since 1969’ in response to the team’s disastrous start to the 2014 NFL season.

A clever and probably rich football fan arranged for a plane to fly with a banner that proclaimed something many a bitter New York Jets has grumbled into a beer late in the fourth quarter of another disappointing outing. It read, ‘Jets Rebuilding Since 1969’. We now have a clear photo of the banner, thanks to Seth Walder at the New York Daily News.

In a way, it’s hard to argue with the sentiment, commonly expressed not just by Jets fans, but by those rooting for the Browns, Bills, Lions, Vikings, and others. Some teams have been seemingly hexed for decades and the Jets are no exception as their latest rebuild around Geno Smith appears to be falling flat on its face.

The New York Jets have been largely unable to fill the shoes of Joe Namath and the 1969 Jets, who shocked the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3 and changed the alignment of professional football as we know it.

These Jets are hardly able to change their turnover-prone ways let alone anything else in the league. With Michael Vick now starting after another failed start by second-year QB Geno Smith, the team can do little but turn to that word flying high in the sky: Rebuild.
