The Arizona Cardinals’ defense became very offensive in Sunday’s 31-14 win over the St. Louis Rams, yet that victory came with a steep cost, as QB Carson Palmer went down with a knee injury

32. Final. 14. 51. 31

Only time will reveal just how stiff the bill for the Arizona Cardinals will be following their 31-14 win over the St. Louis Rams. The Cards improved their league-best record to 8-1, (their best mark since 1948) yet the cost may have been losing quarterback Carson Palmer (again), who went out with a knee injury in the fourth quarter.

As of now, reports are beginning to surface that Palmer indeed did suffer a torn ACL, although the team has not confirmed that.

In olden years, Palmer’s injury might have signaled a skyfall for the Cardinals, yet this version bounced back with 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, sparked by defensive touchdowns from Patrick Peterson (30-yard interception return) and Antonio Cromartie (14-yard fumble recovery) that helped Arizona overcome a 14-10 deficit.

It was Palmer’s replacement, Drew Stanton, that opened the door for the rally when he hit rookie receiver John Brown on a 48-yard touchdown pass that gave the Cards the lead for good with 7:40 remaining.

Arizona managed just 28 yards rushing and 335 yards total, yet the defense stepped up by holding the Rams (3-6) to just 244 yards while holding them out of the end zone in the second half.

With the win, the Cardinals can do nothing but hope that Palmer’s knee will be healthy enough for him to lead Arizona in next week’s matchup against the Detroit Lions, who own the NFC’s second-best mark. The game will have a Bizzaro World-like feel, considering the success (or lack thereof) of the two franchises over the past three decades.
