During the team’s matchup against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday evening, the Tampa Bay captain scored a goal so quickly that the refs didn’t even see it- and it didn’t get reviewed until the next stoppage in play.
The goal, which Stamkos fired past Red Wings netminder Jimmy Howard early in the second period, put the team up 2-1… but only after both teams had played out nearly an entire minute beyond the goal.
As you can see from Stamkos’ reaction to the goal, he’s convinced it went in- because, funnily enough, it did.
Many wondered at the reasoning for being allowed to count a goal after play has continued, so NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk found the NHL Official Rule (78.6) regarding goal reviews after extended play:
"“When a team scores an apparent goal that is not seen by the on-ice officials and play continues, the play shall be reviewed by the Video Goal Judge at the next stoppage of play. If the goal is confirmed by video review, the clock (including penalty time clocks, if applicable) is re-set to the time the goal was scored.”"
While the Red Wings were undoubtedly hoping the goal would get overlooked, you have to give credit to Stamkos. The guy’s goooooooood.
