Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians told Peter King that he believes the Cardinals can win the Super Bowl with backup QB Drew Stanton at the helm.

As the Arizona Cardinals wait for the hammer to fall on news related to starting QB Carson Palmer’s knee injury, head coach Bruce Arians isn’t backing down from the expectations created by a league-best 8-1 start to the 2014 NFL season. If Palmer misses the rest of the season with a torn ACL, as many suspect, then Arians expects the team will remain the league’s best all year with backup Drew Stanton under center.

“We can win the Super Bowl with Drew Stanton,” Arians said per MMQB. “There is no doubt in my mind.”

The Cardinals are atop the NFC and the rest of the league because of a stout defense and an offense that knows how to score timely touchdowns. Consider their latest game against the St. Louis Rams, in which the Cardinals trailed 14-10 when Palmer fell with injury.

Stanton filled in and soon found speedster John Brown for a touchdown that gave the Cardinals the lead for good. The play echoed Arians’ sentiment all year as they pertain to injuries. It’s all about the next man up.

“Injuries happen to everybody,” Arians said. “Free-agent losses happen to everybody. I preach and preach and preach, ‘The most valuable player on the team is not Larry Fitzgerald. It’s who’s gonna take his place after Larry Fitzgerald gets hurt.’”

The Cardinals will put all of that to the test in the next two weeks when they host the Detroit Lions, then visit the Seattle Seahawks. If Drew Stanton can hold his own against those two defense, there might be some real teeth to Arians’ claims and to this Cardinals squad’s Super Bowl chances.
