Carson Palmer ACL Tear Confirmed

Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians confirms quarterback Carson Palmer has torn his ACL and is out for the rest of the season.

Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer went down with an apparent knee injury in Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams. He was carted off the field and all indications seemed to point to an ACL tear. Monday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians confirmed the bad news.

"Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams and will be placed on season-ending injured reserve, coach Bruce Arians announced Monday as reported by ESPN."

With Palmer out, the Cardinals will turn to backup quarterback Drew Stanton. Stanton replaced Palmer in the fourth quarter and led the Cardinals to a victory and the best record in the NFL at 8-1. Stanton is no slouch, as he has previously replaced Palmer earlier in the season when the starter missed three games due to a damaged nerve in his shoulder. The Cardinals proceeded to win two of those games.

Palmer suffered the injury after being sacked by Rams safety Mark Barron. The initial hit didn’t knock Palmer down, but his knee gave out and he fell to the turf while team doctors and trainers rushed to his side. Palmer attempted to walk off the field, but his knee appeared to give out again and he was then placed on a cart and taken off.

The news comes just a few days after Palmer signed an extension worth $50 million over three years. $20.5 million is guaranteed. Palmer suffered a similar injury in 2005 only 10 days after signing a $118 million contract for six years.
