The Jets benched their first-round draft pick, safety Calvin Pryor, for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and started safety Jaiquawn Jarret at the position. The move ended up being huge for the Jets, as Jarrett went on to have the best game of his career. He had two interceptions, one sack and a fumble recovery as the Jets went on to beat the Steelers 20-13. Jarret’s performance was so good Sunday that he just might be up for AFC Defensive Player of the Week when that is announced on Wednesday.

As for Pryor, he was most likely benched for being late to multiple team meetings, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York. It likely wasn’t the only reason, considering Pryor’s play has been inconsistent enough to warrant a benching even without the tardiness. The benching calls into question what’s going on with Pryor’s development. Cimini further mentions in a report by Pro Football Talk, that Pryor’s inattention to detail off the field has obviously frustrated coaches.

"“We were trying to line up guys that we think deserve it, whether it’s in the classroom, on the practice field, or in meetings, being on time for meetings,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said, in a story by ESPN New York."

Pryor was the 18th overall pick in the draft and has very little to show for it this year. He has zero interceptions, no forced fumbles or recoveries, and is only credited with half a sack. Pryor had little to say after not playing a single snap on Sunday.

"“It was a coach’s decision,” Pryor said, via the New York Post. “We were going to rotate, but Jaiquawn Jarrett had a hell of a game, two interceptions, picked-up fumble. Stay with the hot guy, just keep him out there.”"
