Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman does not intend to bench quarterback Jay Cutler after the Bears were embarrassed by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football.

The Bears stumbled through an excruciating loss to the Packers on Sunday, falling 55-14 to sink to the bottom of the NFC North. Cutler wasn’t the only problem in the loss, but he was a big part of it. He threw two interceptions and lost the ball in a strip sack by Julius Peppers. One of the interceptions was returned 82 yards for a touchdown. That brings Cutler’s 2014 interception total to 10 in nine games so far, and his turnover total to 15.

However, Bears coach Marc Trestman said Monday in a story by Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, that he does not intend to bench his struggling quarterback.

“Certainly, we know that Jay’s not comfortable with the way he played yesterday,” Trestman said Monday. “No doubt about it. And I think it’s on an individual basis. I think that we all have to do better. And I say that — I know it starts with the quarterback. It always does. But there are a lot of things that have to get done before something like that would be a consideration.”

Despite reports that enraged Bears fans have been burning their Cutler jerseys. Of course, Cutler is the highest paid NFL player this season, so benching him would be somewhat of a shocking move, and it wasn’t all Cutler’s fault that the defense allowed 55 points to the Packers.

Nevertheless, Trestman did admit that Cutler’s play on Sunday was far from good.

“I think the biggest thing is that Jay has got to play better,” he said. “He didn’t play well enough yesterday, and we didn’t play well enough, and I’m certain that he’d take accountability for that.”

Next up for the Bears is a meeting with the division rival Minnesota Vikings at home in Chicago.
