In the latest chapter of “If only (fill in the blank) had happened….” New York Jets RB Chris Johnson laments on how the team’s 2-7 record might have been better if QB Michael Vick had been starting all season.

New York Jets running back Chris Johnson must be a Cher fan, because he certainly went to the “If I Can Turn Back Time” card when talking about quarterback Michael Vick.

In the real world, the Jets are 2-8 following last Sunday’s surprising 20-13 over the Pittsburgh Steelers, yet Johnson feels they’d be in the thick of the AFC playoff chase had Vick started the first eight games instead of erratic (look, it’s a family-friendly site, so erratic is the most clean word we can do) Geno Smith.

“I think if he was starting from Day 1 it would be totally different. He came in and his role was to help Geno (Smith) develop and try to help him the best he can, but at the end of the day it turned out how it turned out and (we’ve) just got to live with it.”

Obviously, Vick the starting quarterback is working a hell of a lot better than Vick the teacher. Smith’s 65.6 quarterback rating is due in part to 10 interceptions, six fumbles and a 55.6 completion percentage. That, my friends, translates into a 1-7 record and a huge Gang Green F.

Johnson’s take makes it very unlikely that (barring a Secret Santa scenario) he’ll be receiving a Christmas gift from Smith. At the same time, considering the team will make drastic moves during the offseason, it’s also unlikely one — if not both — will be around for next season.
