One would think Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly would be pleased after Monday’s 45-14 pasting of the Carolina Panthers on Monday night, yet he was less than overjoyed by the effort.
“I just didn’t think we were very consistent overall,” Kelly said. “I think we could have sustained some drives. We missed a couple key conversions on short yardage situations that we didn’t convert.”
Ah, the run game.
While quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for 332 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his first start for the Eagles, the run game continued its season-long inconsistency, managing just 37 yards on 23 carries. Philly is a respectable 13th in the league in rushing, yet the team has failed to string together a stream of production, as All-Pro back LeSean McCoy has averaged just 3.7 yards per carry and scored just his second touchdown on the ground during Monday’s game.
“I think that if you asked the guys on the offensive side of the ball, they felt like they didn’t play well,” added Kelly. “I believe we didn’t really play up to our potential on the offensive side of the ball.”
Damn. When you think about that last sentence, it’s kind of scary to imagine just what may happen if the Eagles really played up to their offensive potential. Considering that they’re fourth in both yards per game (404.3) and points per game (31.0), you might want to say a prayer for the defense who runs up against the Eagles when they do click on all gears.
