ESPN: We Didn’t Steal Anything From Daniel Tosh

It’s Comedy Central vs. ESPN in the latest edition of Hey,  You Stole My $&%*, as CC’s Daniel Tosh says the sports giant ripped off one of his signature routines.

After Comedy Central’s Daniel Tosh went ballistic with accusations ESPN stole one of his signature routines, the four-letter network in Connecticut released a statement Wednesday denying those claims.

Tosh claims ESPN lifted a segment from Tosh’s Tosh.0 program called “Web Redemption” and changed the title to “Awesome Video Segment.”

Too bad nobody at ESPN was assigned as the “Awesome Title Developer.”

The ESPN segment even used Tosh’s catchphrase, “Are you ready to give it another shot.”

Tosh even fired back, mocking ESPN’s “Sports Science” segment on Tuesday while taking shots at the network and its on-air talent, according to TMZ.

On Wednesday, ESPN told TMZ.com:

"“This was more an instance of us using a common phrase than it was copying his wording. We know that doesn’t sound like the strongest explanation, yet it’s the truth.”"

Translation: We totally copied the bit, but good luck getting through our brigade of million-dollar lawyers to prove it, Comedy Central dude.

It’s the entertainment business and if something works, you can bet your bottom dollar someone else will borrow, lift, pilfer, poach or otherwise completely rip it off.

Look at Hollywood movies—have there been more than two original ideas that have actually made their way in front of a camera in the last 10 years?

It’s hard to tell with the six bazillion sequels and reboots—which sounds so much better than “remake”—that have been foisted on a public dulled into 140-character at a time compliance.

ESPN even threw the gauntlet down.

"“We are looking forward to ‘giving it another shot’ in future installment of ‘The Awesome Video Segment.’”"

Translation: Nah. That last part really doesn’t need a translation.
