In the current NBA lexicon, there is a lot of talk about “rim protectors.” Before the Washington Wizards played Wednesday night, the rim took that job seriously.

Glen Rice Jr. of the Washington Wizards wanted to do something fancy during warmups before his team’s game against the Detroit Pistons at the Verizon Center in Washington.

The end result? Epic fail.

Paul Pierce, the 216-year-old veteran small forward for the Wizards (age approximate), has been around long enough to know the difference between a good play and a WTH and his face told the story.

I mean, that was one of the best, “Damn, son!” looks we’ve seen in awhile.

It’s pretty bad, though, when your intention is to rock the rim and instead you get rocked by it.

Of course, one of the popular terms in the current NBA vocabulary is “rim protector,” as in teams must have at least one in order to be able to play adequate defense.

But what happened to Rice Wednesday night could have chilling overtones for the entire NBA, perhaps the entire sport.

Are the rims becoming self-aware?

Are they taking their protection into their own … hoops (hands doesn’t really work here since, well, rims don’t have hands)?

Will basketball players around the globe now have to not only battle defensive players but vigilante rims?

These are the questions that keep us up at night … particularly when one has had cold pizza just before bed.
