What Is Happening To The Colorado Avalanche?
The Colorado Avalanche haven’t just started off slow… they’ve stayed slow
Head coach and former NHL netminder Patrick Roy led such a dominant franchise last season.

The Colorado Avalanche rose to the top of the league last season, and put up a tremendous fight in the first round of the playoffs.
They made minimal changes to their roster during the off-season; although they lost alternate captain Paul Stastny, they brought in veteran superstar Jarome Iginla. Iginla was hungry for a cup… the team assumed that between him, the myriad of superstar offensemen, and Semyon Varlamov in net, this would be their year.
Yet, the franchise has struggled out of the gate in an almost satirical way.
The Avalanche started off the season with nine consecutive periods of scoreless play, and a month and a half later they’re still losing in 6-0 shutout battles.
When asked, Roy seemed at a loss for an explanation to give as to why the Colorado team can’t seem to win. In a recent article on NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, a whole slew of dismal stats were given- but in the quotes by Roy, not many answers were provided.
"“Obviously last year everything was bouncing our way,” coach Patrick Roy said post-game. “Right now, it’s tougher, but at the same time, I’ll say this: we need to stay together, we need to continue to work hard at the things that we’ve been doing well.”"
This quote, of course, came after the aforementioned 6-0 shutout loss, in which the team fell to the Eastern Conference’s New York Islanders. Who, no doubt, have improved this season… but enough to dominate over a team with Matt Duschene, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, and Ryan O’Rielly?
The season isn’t even two months in, and the Avs still have time to recover. There are no answers yet, though — and without a reason for the struggles, it seems hard to believe they’ll end soon.
