The Los Angeles Kings are not allowed to use illness as an excuse under Darryl Sutter

There is no one in the NHL quite like Darryl Sutter, my friends. If there’s an NHL Ebola outbreak, I am blaming him (and Corey Perry).

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Kings head coach, he clearly stated that his team wouldn’t be using illness as an excuse, unlike a lot of teams around the league. He suggested that despite a number of his players feeling under the weather this past weekend, they were expected to weather it like professionals. They had three days off to recover, he insisted.

Of course, not every player with a sniffle can complain that a loss should be attributed to his seasonal allergies. Winter is coming and these are guys who make millions practically living on the ice. They’re bound to come down with a cold or two.

It seems interesting that Sutter should make these comments now, though, in light of the situation with the Anaheim Ducks.

The Ducks have been missing elite forward Corey Perry for over a week now, with what the team has confirmed is a viral gland infection.

The team is still waiting on results from blood tests to determine exactly what kind of virus the two skaters have, but they’re clearly in no condition to play; and with Ryan Getzlaf missing a game for similar symptoms to Perry, it’s possible that something is contagious.

The Ducks aren’t the only team dealing with a slew of illnesses, as the Minnesota Wild have been under the weather and Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau was cited as having flu-like symptoms as well. The Kings, though, just have to tough it out.
