The Dallas Stars forward has already been fined by the league for sucker-punching Sharks blue liner Justin Braun during the two team’s matchup this weekend.
Now, it seems that he might have injured netminder Alex Stalock when he bowled him over just prior to the punch.
The Sharks had previously confirmed Stalock as starting against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday; many were baffled when Antti Niemi skated out to the crease instead.
All became clear, though, on Wednesday.
According to NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, the team placed Stalock on injured reserve and recalled AHL netminder Troy Grosenick, vaguely citing a lower body injury for Stalock as the reasoning behind the move. They didn’t specify that it was from the Roussel hit (which I’ve provided below, for those who haven’t seen it yet), but all indicators point to this being the case. He hadn’t played since that game, and it seems unlikely that the team would conceal an injury sustained during practice or the warm-up skate.
Of course, the Stars are probably hoping that it wasn’t Roussel’s fault, but the Sharks are probably hoping even more that everything is okay soon.
In Stalock’s first couple of contests this season, he’s posted a .925 SV% and only allowed 2.38 GAA; a bit below where he was last year, but certainly nothing a team can complain about in a backup.
