Byron Scott: Los Angeles Lakers ‘Worst Defense I’ve Ever Seen’
By Ed Carroll
Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott ripped his team’s defensive effort following a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, calling the Lakers defense the worst he’s seen in his years in the NBA.
Byron Scott has seen bad defense in his career as both an NBA player and head coach, and apparently the defense on his 1-7 Los Angeles Lakers during a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans was the worst he’s ever seen.

“We just did a terrible job defensively,” Scott said, via the Daily News. “That was the worst defense we played preseason and all the way up to this particular point. We’re not even close to our expectations, or at least mine.”
Kobe Bryant called the 109-102 loss (which saw the Lakers make up a sizable deficit during garbage time in the fourth quarter) a “layup drill,” so this wasn’t necessarily just Scott blowing smoke.
The Lakers are bad, but Scott has coached on some really bad teams before (and that’s not blaming Scott for the teams being bad). Scott had the dubious honor of coaching the post-LeBron Cleveland Cavaliers for three of the four years, including the season they lost 26 straight games, so he’s seen plenty of bad defensive performances.
The Lakers allow 111.5 points per game (114.5 points per 100 possessions) and opponents are shooting 50 percent on field goals against them.
