While Bono was traveling on a private Learjet 60 to Berlin for the Bambi Awards, a door on the plane flew off. The back door of the plane, by where the luggage is kept, apparently fell off. An official from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, Germout Freitag, said that they are still unsure why the door flew off.
“There can be many reasons for this incident. Either something broke on the door or the door wasn’t closed properly. Those are the usual problems that occur,” Freitag said. He also said that it could take up to a year for authorities to finish and resolve their investigation.
The plane took off from Dublin, Ireland and did not have to stop, even though the door fell off. The plane had no issues landing in Germany and Bono was able to arrive safely.
Bono was traveling to Berlin where he and his band U2 were to be honored and then perform. He also met with Walter Linder, Germany’s special representative for the fight against Ebola and discuss the deadly virus.
Aviation expert and news consultant for ABC, John Nance, explained on ABC that the plane incident was very rare and that no one was in harm’s way.
“What happened here is very unusual, but they were never really at risk,” Nance said. “The passengers may have been scared when they heard a noise, but they never lost pressurization.”
Bono and U2 are slated to perform and receive their Bambi Award today, November 13.
