In 1994, Tony Gwynn was playing for the San Diego Padres and hitting .394 before the player’s strike ended the season. AleSmith created the San Diego Pale Ale .394 in Gwynn’s honor. It is a pretty unique way to honor someone, but you’d have to believe it will be in high demand by beer lovers in San Diego because Tony Gwynn is so beloved in the city.

AleSmith will be releasing the first-ever 119 12oz six packs of San Diego Pale Ale .394 at their special event on Sunday, November 16th in their tasting room.

Here is a look at the six pack

AleSmith announced they were going to release the IPA in June after Gwynn had passed away.  AleSmith’s description says it has “A balanced malt profile will round out these hoppy flavors with a biscuity finish to enhance drinkability throughout the innings.” AleSmith seems to have designed this to be a beer they might want to start selling at Padres games sometime soon with that description.

Gwynn began working on the project with AleSmith before he passed away in June. AleSmith’s CEO and owner Peter Zein said that they worked with “Mr. Padre” to create the beer because he and AleSmith shared the same mutual commitment to excellence.

"“Tony Gwynn and his team chose AleSmith because of our mutual pursuit of perfection. Formulating and brewing a new style with a San Diego baseball legend has been doubly rewarding. Not only have we had the opportunity to meet and work with Tony and his family, but have also created a delicious new beer worthy of the title San Diego Pale Ale 394.”"

It seems to be beer that would be great in baseball stadiums around the country and honors Gwynn’s legacy wonderfully. If I am in San Diego anytime soon, I will be definitely be getting my hands on bottle of this and hopefully it will find its way all around the country.
