USC Cornerback Josh Shaw broke his silence about his lie that he jumped off a balcony to save his nephew from drowning back in August.
In August of this year, USC Athletics published a story on their website that told about how USC cornerback Josh Shaw injured both of his ankles when he jumped from a balcony to save his drowning nephew. It didn’t take long for the real truth to come out right after Shaw was praised all over the media for being a hero.

After three days, Josh Shaw released a statement saying it was all fabricated, and that the real truth is that he jumped off his balcony after an argument with his girlfriend. The police were called to the apartment as a result of the incident and authorities opened a domestic violence potential case. But, he has not been charged with any crime.
Shaw finally broke his silence on the incident with the Los Angeles Times’ Bill Plaschke. He said that on Aug. 23 he went home to meet his girlfriend, Angela Chilton, of seven years and then an argument broke out and Chilton ran down the hall. Shaw jumped off the balcony and landed on his feet when he heard police on the street. He called his brother but didn’t go to the hospital.
“I was in excruciating pain,” Shaw said. “But I thought, how do I explain to my coaches that, as a senior captain, I just shattered both of my legs? I wanted to come up with something that they would say, ‘Josh, if you got hurt, that’s a good reason to get hurt.’ That’s where fabrication came in.”
Josh Shaw said that he told USC the story about his nephew the next day and they ordered him to the hospital.
“I thought I could find an easy way out of something, but that doesn’t work — I have made a mistake, and I have paid for it,” he said. “And whether I do play or don’t play again, I’ll be forever grateful [to] USC for giving me a chance.”
The USC Trojans are currently 6-3 and giving up over 22 points a game on defense with Shaw. USC head coach Steve Sarkisian welcomed him back to the team after the Trojans lost 37-31 to Boston College on Sept. 13, but he has yet to play in a game.
