If you’ve been hearing the name Philae these past 24 hours and have no idea what that means, we have a simple explanation for you that is out of this world — literally.
Thursday saw the internet explode with interest in something called ‘Philae’, which had nothing to do with people spelling Philadelphia wrong, rather it had more to do with interstellar space travel and astrological significance. The reason you’re hearing so much about Philae is because its the first man made instrument that has been guided to and planted on a comet in the history of mankind.

It’s not landing on the moon — but it’s landing on a freaking comet, I mean how cool is that. If there was every anything that made us feel like kids again, it’s hearing about some new space travel method that has been tried and successfully accomplished by man kind, and that happened today with the landing of Philae.
Philae is the name of the lander that landed on this particular comet on Thursday, but the actual lander is a Rosetta spacecraft. All of this seems like it should be in Interstellar but let’s be honest — this is total Armageddon right here. The only thing missing is Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis and Aerosmith and this would be the most 90s day ever.
But in all seriousness, this is an outstanding feat for mankind as it may not be walking on the moon for the first time but it’s something that had never been done before. In an age where we can watch porn on the toilet with two clicks and a swipe on our phones and we have limbs that can be artificially created to allow amputees to become Olympic stars, the fact that we’re still doing things that have never been done before is amazing to fathom.
