Giants’ JPP Challenges 49ers To Use Read Option

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul says the Giants are ready to handle the read option if the 49ers use it.

The Giants defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell, had a few fightin’ words for the Giants’ next opponent the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.

“We’re going to come and we’re going to compete and we’re going to get us a victory on Sunday,” Fewell said in a story by Pro Football Talk.

Jason Pierre-Paul backed up his coordinator on Friday by saying that the 49ers can bring the read option and they’ll be ready to take care of it.

Of course, the Giants are coming off a loss to the Seattle Seahawks wherein they allowed 350 yards rushing, some of it by bruising back Marshawn Lynch, but plenty of it from elusive quarterback Russell Wilson. The 49ers obviously have an elusive quarterback of their own and have been known to use the read option a time or two.  The Giants need to be more than ready, they need to have a plan.

The Giants defended the pass well against the Seahawks, but when Seattle suddenly started running the read option consistently, the Giants seemed to be completely unprepared for it and were gashed for big gains, not to mention five touchdowns. The Giants will take their fifth straight loss if they lose to the 49ers on Sunday, a likely outcome if San Francisco takes advantage of the vulnerabilities that the Seahawks exploited.

A big part of why the Giants are losing so much is their defense. Eli Manning has thrown less interceptions in recent games and it’s clear they have a future star in wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, and they should be getting their starting back in Rashad Jennings back as well. However, the Giants are allowing the most yards per game in the NFL this season. They won’t be winning many games that way.
