Jerry Jones: Dez Bryant, Contract Talks Not A Distraction For Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t think the contract negotiations with wide receiver Dez Bryant, and the very public comments about it, are a distraction.

The Dallas Cowboys are having some stand out seasons from some of their star players, including running back DeMarco Murray and wide receiver Dez Bryant. The contract discussions regarding Bryant have been particularly been of focus in the media and press, with Ian Rapoport’s report about off-field issue concerns and Bryant’s warning about challenging his loyalty.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been steadfast in his commitment to keep Bryant in Dallas, and now is calming any fan’s concerns by saying contract talks have not become a distraction.

“It’s not a distraction at all,” Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM], via the Dallas Morning News. “It obviously didn’t distract Dez [when he caught six passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns Sunday in London], and it doesn’t distract us. It’s a meaningful contract to the degree that it does and will impact our financial management of our salary cap, which is a big part of what helps get a good team on the field. So it deserves the kind of attention that we’re giving it.

“If you really think about it, have you seen any more attention to his contract than any significant player that we’ve ever had that was out of contract next year and we needed to address a new contract? I don’t see any difference from any of the ones that I’ve ever been involved in, whether it was Michael Irvin, whether it was Erik Williams. I just don’t see any difference. It’s always there, exactly like it is with Dez.”
