It certainly is interesting to think about what the Knicks could get for Smith in a deal.
The 29-year-old has long displayed fantastic offensive talent, but his shot selection his poor and isn’t exactly a team player. Smith also has had issues with the law and the NBA’s league office in the past.
Also, Smith has struggled this year. He’s averaging 9.7 points on an inefficient 41.7 percent shooting from the field and a putrid 25.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
However, ESPN’s Nick Borges is among those that believe the Knicks could find a team to take Smith off their hands.
"“J.R. has had a lot of issues but he can be a big-time scorer when he’s doing the right things,” one high-ranking league executive. “There’s always a team out there willing to take a chance on somebody if they feel he can put them over the top, and there’s no doubt J.R. can play. People are going to be concerned about chemistry issues in the locker room, so it would have to be a strong leadership and coaching staff that take him in.”"
This is certainly a situation to monitor.
Smith, a 10-year veteran, has been with the Knicks since the 2011-12 season.
