Ben Dogra has been fired by his agency, the Creative Artists Agency, as reported by Darren Rovell of ESPN on Thursday. Dogra was the agent for several top tier NFL players, including Richard Sherman, JJ Watt, Adrian Peterson and Robert Griffin III among others. The exact reason remains unknown, but ESPN did report that he was fired with cause. Dogra confirmed his own dismissal and released this statement:
"“I want to thank CAA for the great time we have had together. There are absolutely no hard feelings about my moving on, and I am excited to be writing a new chapter in my sports agency career. I am really looking forward to bigger and better things in the NFL agency business, and I will continue to always be devoted to the best interest of my clients.”"
Dogra was considered one of the top agents in the business and was even profiled by Forbes as one of the world’s most powerful sports agents. He had a ton of clout in the business, as proved by the top contracts negotiated for the players he represented. As Albert Breer for NFL Network put it, agents being fired usually isn’t news, but when it’s Ben Dogra, it’s huge.
Dogra’s most recent negotiated contract was for Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. The contract was worth $98 million over seven years and makes McCoy the highest-paid player at his position. The player likely with the most to lose from Dogra’s dismissal is wide receiver Jeremy Maclin of the Philadelphia Eagles. Maclin is having a huge season in a contract year. He was represented by Dogra.
At the present, it is unclear how CAA will replace Dogra and his influence. It is also unknown whether Dogra also lost certification or if he is simply leaving CAA.
