The San Diego Chargers have placed promising rookie cornerback Jason Verrett on injured reserve, ending his first NFL season.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports confirmed Saturday that the Chargers have placed Jason Verrett on injured reserve after he re-aggravated his shoulder injury back in Week 8 against the Denver Broncos.

He was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and missed the 37-0 pasting by the Miami Dolphins before the Chargers went into their bye week. Likely the Chargers wanted to see where Verrett was after another week off.

Verrett, a first-round pick out of Texas Christian, has been big for the Chargers when healthy.  He has 19 tackles, one interception and four defensed passes. Verrett originally suffered a shoulder injury in Week 6 against the Oakland Raiders.

He suffered the injury in the second half, but returned to make the game-sealing interception. Verrett then missed the next game against the Kansas City Chiefs, before surprisingly returning against Denver.

Verrett played 20 snaps before aggravating the shoulder injury and spending the rest of the game on the sidelines with his arm in a sling.

There were postgame questions about Verrett playing in that game and there be might be more now that his season is over.

Verrett dismissed the questions after the game and whether he thought he should have played via a story by ESPN.

"“No, not at all,” Verrett said. “My goal is to always be ready every week. I tested it out pregame. I felt great. I just was trying to go out there because we were kind of short at corner. I just wanted to help my team.”"

The Chargers are in the midst of a three game losing streak as they prepare to face the Raiders for the second time on Sunday.
