Clemson welcomed back freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson Saturday, briefly, in a 28-6 loss at Georgia Tech. Watson was lost to a torn ACL.

Georgia Tech kept the heat on Duke in the ACC’s Coastal Division Saturday, shutting down Clemson at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, 28-6.

Clemson began the day welcoming back true freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had missed three games and most of a fourth since breaking his hand against Louisville on Oct. 11.

But Watson left with a knee injury late in the first quarter and did not return. It was later reported he tore an ACL.

Clemson (7-3) led 3-0 at the time Watson went out, but the momentum changed quickly.

Senior Cole Stoudt came in and threw a pass that Tech’s Jamal Golden turned into an 85-yard pick six and the Yellow Jackets (9-2) took a 6-3 lead.

It was just 9-3 at the half before Georgia Tech pulled away in the fourth quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from Justin Thomas to DeAndre Smelter. The teams traded field goals to make it 19-6 before Stoudt struck again … the wrong way.

Stoudt was intercepted by Chris Milton, who returned it 62 yards for Georgia Tech’s second interception return for touchdown on the day and a commanding 25-6 lead with 1:23 left in the third period.

Clemson’s lone scores were field goals from 27 and 32 yards by Ammon Lakip.

The Tigers only gained 190 yards on the day, just 65 through the air. Watson was 5-for-7 for 27 yards before he was hurt. Stoudt was 3-for-11 for 19 yards and three interceptions before he was replaced by sophomore Nick Schuessler, who hadn’t thrown a pass in a game since Sept. 6 against South Carolina State.

Georgia Tech, now 6-2 in ACC play, got 89 yards rushing from Synjyn Davis while Thomas was 8-for-11 for 102 yards and a touchdown and also rushed 11 times for 46 yards.

The Yellow Jackets piled up 251 yards on the ground and finished with 353 yards of total offense.

Both teams are finished with conference play. Clemson hosts Georgia State next week, while Georgia Tech will be idle until visiting arch-rival Georgia on Nov. 29.
