The Colorado Avalanche could be next in line to host one of the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series

The Winter Classic– and the subsequent Stadium Series winter outdoor games — might be the most successful endeavor the NHL has ever undertaken.

First played in 2008 in Buffalo, New York, the Winter Classic has become one of the most wildly popular and anticipated events around the league. This year’s game, which is to be played at the Washington Nationals Ballpark in D.C. between the Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks, is drawing crowds from every corner of North America.

The Stadium Series games, hosted by Coors Light, aren’t quite as big of an affair as the Winter Classic itself; they don’t have nearly the grandeur, sponsorship, or event lineup. This might be why the Winter Classic has been seemingly confined to parts of the league north of D.C. and east of Chicago — the league is trying to ensure that the big event itself will be played in front of a big crowd with plenty of winter chill in the air.

The Colorado Avalanche are happy to take what they are offered, though, and a Stadium Series game is definitely nothing to scoff at.

According to the Denver Post, it’s ‘highly likely’ that the Avs will be given the opportunity to host a Stadium Series game at Coors Field, home to the Colorado Rockies of the MLB. This would coincide perfectly with the team’s twentieth anniversary — and while there has been no official word released about whether the Avalanche truly have this to look forward to or who they would be playing, the team is overjoyed at the thought of hosting one of the league’s most successful events.

*Crosses fingers for a Colorado Avalanche — Dallas Stars game*
