Is Geno Smith finished with the New York Jets after his poor performance this season in his second NFL year?
The New York Jets selected quarterback Geno Smith with the 39th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and were hoping that he would be able to turn into their quarterback of the future. Unfortunately, that simply doesn’t appear to be the case moving forward and there is growing belief in the New York media that the Jets are done with him and will move forward this coming offseason.

Michael Vick is currently the starting quarterback, and he led the Jets to a big win over the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. He is likely going to get the starting nod for the rest of the year unless he completely gives the position up, but it’s hard to play worse than Smith did during his tenure as the starter earlier this season. Rich Cimini of ESPN.com answered the question of whether or not the Jets were done with Smith, and made it very clear that he feels they are.
Take a look at his answer to a fans question from a mailbag article that he published:
"Yes, I do think Geno Smith might be finished in New York, especially if the John Idzik-led administration is gone. The best plan is to have a veteran starter who can hold the fort — someone like Vick — and a rookie heir apparent. The Jets have to create hope at quarterback, and returning in 2015 with a Vick-Smith tandem wouldn’t inspire hope — or sell tickets. If Vick performs reasonably well over the final six games, he’d be worth bringing back on a short-term contract. The free-agent market is thin (Brian Hoyer and Mark Sanchez are the top names), so Vick might be your best bet as long as there’s a prospect waiting in the wings. Smith doesn’t fit in that equation. In other words, he might be toast."
Smith has played in eight games this season, throwing for 1,370 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He didn’t seem to be able to improve his decision making over the year and a half that he played, and he wasn’t able to stay consistent. There were a few games that he showed the potential to be a starting NFL quarterback, but for the most part there was never major hope that he would become their future.
New York is going to be heading into a new era of football next season, more than likely without head coach Rex Ryan. Smith isn’t the type of quarterback that a new head coach will come in with a high opinion of, and that might just mean the end for him with the Jets.
At just 24 years of age, there is still time for Smith to turn things around and work on his game. If he does show signs of improvement over the course of the rest of the season and offseason, maybe he’ll have a chance to compete for playing time with whoever is on the roster next season. Either way, his time in New York is numbered, and he’ll have to show some major improvement if he wants to turn things around and reclaim the starting job.
