Northwestern is doing a good job of trying to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the day on Saturday against Notre Dame.

Last weekend the Notre Dame Fighting Irish dropped their second game of the season to a very good Arizona State team, so the loss wasn’t really heavily criticized. However, a loss to Northwestern on Saturday would draw a lot of ire from the national media, and that’s what may happen.

Late in the fourth quarter Notre Dame was just up 40-37. With time winding down on the clock, Northwestern was able to drive themselves into field goal range. With 19 seconds on the clock, the Wildcats needed to nail through a 45-yard field goal off the foot of Jack Mitchell.

And he nailed it.

Again, Notre Dame has had a great season, and their two losses were to two teams that they could get a pass for losing to. However, dropping one to a 3-6 Northwestern team will not go over well with the analysts and it certainly won’t go over well with the fans in South Bend.
