Chicago Blackhawks fall 4-1 to Detroit Red Wings, largely due to turnovers

The Chicago Blackhawks are off to a rough start.

The Central Division franchise, originally projected as one of three teams most likely to win the 2015 Stanley Cup, is currently sitting outside of playoff contention in the Western Conference — and a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings Friday night didn’t help matters.

The loss wasn’t entirely Kris Versteeg’s fault, but his ‘centering pass’ to Red Wings forward Drew Miller started the Atlantic Division franchise off with scoring. Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville agrees, too.

"“There are mistakes and there are cardinal sins. The purists of hockey wouldn’t tolerate that kind of play,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville told CSN Chicago. “Nobody would’ve made that play. It’s an unacceptable play.”"

Of course, it’s important to note that Versteeg wasn’t alone when it came to crucial turnovers during the loss. Once the Blackhawks had evened up the scoring at 1-1, Patrick Kane — who had scored the team’s one and only goal — practically handed the puck over to Detroit to put them back in the lead. One minute and ten seconds after Kane’s turnover to Johan Franzen, Tomas Tatar managed to slip one past Corey Crawford to pull ahead by two. Add an empty-netter by Brendan Smith, and the game’s all over.

This brings the Blackhawks to a 9-7-1 record; hopefully, they can pull out that elusive tenth win against the Dallas Stars on Sunday night.
