The Boston Bruins could be faced with yet another significant player injury

The Boston Bruins and the Columbus Blue Jackets only differ in the timing of their injuries.

While the Blue Jackets had nine significant roster players out on injured reserve simultaneously — including starting netminder Sergei Bobrovsky, which was arguably the biggest factor in their nine game losing streak — the Bruins have had their major injuries somewhat more spaced out. The biggest chunk came when four blue liners were all out at the same time, but beyond that, they haven’t had too many issues.

That could change, though, if they lose left wing Brad Marchand for any period of time.

Marchand, who has skated on the second line with alternate captain Patrice Bergeron and newcomer Reilly Smith exclusively since last season, is one of the most highly criticized players on the Bruins. He went over twenty playoff contests without scoring a single goal, and had bouts throughout the regular season where he went through similar dry spells.

Still, the Halifax native’s impact is obvious — the team is 9-0-0 in games where he has notched a point this season.

During the Bruins’ 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, Marchand was given significantly limited ice time during the third period; although head Coach Claude Julien denies an injury, that could just be a way to buy time until they know if something’s really wrong.

After speculations that Marchand was on the trading block this summer, many can’t imagine the Bruins spending any period of time without him on the ice next to Bergeron. The team may be in third in the Atlantic, but one injury could easily change that.
