The Chicago Cubs have traded RHP Arodys Vizcaino to the Atlanta Braves for second basemen Tommy La Stella. This comes as the first move that manager Joe Maddon has finalized to get Cubs fans excited about next season. The Cubs had been trying to acquire La Stella from the Braves.
La Stella is a great pickup for a Cubs team that was very poor – to put it nice – last season. He has great ability for a soon-to-be second year player and hit .251 with 31 RBI in a limited role for the Atlanta Braves. He also led all National League rookies in on-base-percentage -.328 – and walks with 39.
The Braves will receive Arodys Vizcaino, a reliever from the Dominican. He only pitched 5 innings in 2014 with 5 earned runs and a 5.40 ERA. Before 2014, the only other action Vizcaino saw was in 2011 where we pitched only 17.1 innings and had 17 strikeouts for the Braves.
The Cubs recently just signed manager Joe Maddon and hope to be able to get a better product on the field and this move provides a start. This move adds depth in the middle infield, a position that was not very consistent last year. La Stella should be able to come in right away and provide a high average as well.
The Cubs finished last year at 73-89 and look forward with La Stella hopefully manning the middle of the infield next year. The Cubs finished last in the competitive National League Central.
The Braves struggled last year as well but did finish with a 79-83 record for a third place finish in the National League East. The move for Vizcaino have the Braves hoping to improve that already strong 3.38 team ERA in 2014.
