Dallas Stars still having trouble winning on home ice

The Dallas Stars, thankfully, are no longer deep in the throes of a seven-game losing streak.

Before fans count their blessings, though, it’s important to take a look at the team’s trends in recent weeks — and their trends on home ice are less than reassuring.

The Central Division franchise advanced to a 1-4-4 record at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on Saturday night, when they fell 2-1 to the Minnesota Wild. The particularly concerning part of this? The Stars have been considered the weaker team on defense in most contests so far this season — but the Wild had quite a few holes in the blue line due to a seeming outbreak of the mumps.

The Stars were considered a playoff favorite heading into the 2014-2015 NHL season; free agency acquisitions and the allure of a dynamic sophomore season from forward Valeri Nichushkin both gave the impression that the Dallas franchise would be all but unstoppable.

Yet, the team’s blue line is still young and extremely inexperienced; this lack of consistency in the Stars’ own zone has resulted in a number of mid-game collapses and unnecessary losses. Even in games in which Tyler Seguin nets hat tricks (which he did against the San Jose Sharks just a week prior to the loss to the Wild) weren’t yielding wins; no matter what they do, the Stars have been unable to pull themselves out of the bottom of the Western Conference.

Veteran blue liner Trevor Daley and captain Jamie Benn both expressed their dissatisfaction with the team’s overall play; hopefully, the franchise will be able to turn things around before winter sets in.
