They’re already in kind of a bind, as two players (Corey Perry, Francois Beauchemin) are both out for an indeterminate length of time with –if you can believe it — the mumps. Dany Heatley has been placed back on injured reserve, and has only played in four scoreless games with the team so far. On top of that, netminder John Gibson is still on injured reserve himself with a groin injury.
In order to stay at the top of the NHL standings, the Ducks would need to stop losing key players; this doesn’t seem like it’s going to be the case, as the team has announced that winger Devante Smith-Pelly is out with an upper body injury.
Smith-Pelly, 22, has notched seven points with the team so far this season; that number looks a whole lot more important when you realize that two of those points came in the last three games. It seemed like the forward’s play was picking up, possibly to compensate for the loss of Perry, but now the team will have to make do without him.
Of course, it’s possible that Smith-Pelly’s issue is a bum shoulder; should that be the case, don’t expect him back in the lineup particularly quickly.
