Martin Brodeur likely has a job with the New Jersey Devils, but is still lingering in the league

There’s little doubt in anyone’s minds that when Martin Brodeur is done wandering around the NHL, he’s got a home in New Jersey.

Arguably the greatest goaltender to ever take the ice in North America (or anywhere for that matter), Brodeur finally opted to leave the Devils at the end of the 2013-2014 season. The team had split playing time evenly between him and newcomer Cory Schneider, but Brodeur — who was on the brink of his 42nd birthday when the season ended — had seen a decline in his play that quite possibly cost the team a playoff spot.

Rather than retire and join the team’s front office, though, Martin Brodeur has opted to remain a free agent. He hasn’t gotten any offers that please him, and he’s not getting the opportunity to play anywhere… but the three-time Stanley Cup Champion seems determined to get another season or two under his belt before he completely retires.

According to Elliotte Friedman, it’s possible that Brodeur has his eye on a specific team — and it’s likely that team is in Anaheim.

This would make sense. The team is dealing with some weirdness in goal, as rookie netminder John Gibson was off to a somewhat questionable start before being sidelined with a groin injury, and AHL call-up Jason LaBarbera has been less than desirable for the Pacific Division powerhouse. Adding someone like Brodeur as a backup, even temporarily, could alleviate some of the stress this is undoubtedly putting on starter Frederik Andersen.

In addition, Brodeur’s got a personal connection with the Ducks; their assistant coach, Scott Niedermayer, was a Stanley Cup champion with Brodeur back in New Jersey.

There’s no word on whether Brodeur is who Anaheim has their eyes on, but there have been rumors that the team is shopping the market for another man to add in net. Based on what we know, this coupling isn’t too far out of the realm of possibility.
