When the clock malfunctioned at Soldier Field Sunday, officials kept time on the field. But Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer wasn’t happy about it.

The Chicago Bears eked out a 21-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday at Soldier Field, but when the Vikings were trying to get a potential game-tying score late in the game, they were doing so without the benefit of a functioning stadium clock, something that left Vikings coach Mike Zimmer incensed.

The clocks malfunctioned several times during the game and by the fourth quarter, the officials took over the timekeeping on the field.

That meant rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was trying to direct a hurry-up drive while only being vaguely aware of the time remaining based on periodic announcements by referee Ron Torbert, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Zimmer summed up the situation thusly (warning, language is definitely NSFW):

Minnesota had no timeouts remaining and without knowing where the clock was, it was difficult to gauge when to spike the ball to stop the … dude’s stopwatch.

The drive ended when Bridgewater was intercepted by Ryan Mundy with exactly some time left in the game.

"“Ultimately if we win the game, we won’t care about the clock,” Vikings center John Sullivan said. “I can understand that perspective, especially when you’re out there in a two-minute drive, but we were just out there playing, we almost forgot about the whole thing.”"

The Bears issued a statement regarding the timekeeping situation, shared via Twitter by Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun Times.
