Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll came to the defense of embattled New York Jets general manager John Idzik, calling his recent press conference “gallant.”

When the New York Jets hired John Idzik from the Seattle Seahawks to be their new general manager in January 2013, it’s pretty clear they didn’t think the team would be in dire straits less than two years later.

But at 2-8 on their bye week, there are many voices inside and outside the organization calling for Idzik’s head.

However, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is not one of them. Carroll defended his former colleague in Seattle on a New York radio station last week, saying Idzik’s Oct. 27 press conference was a “gallant” move.

“I don’t know how a guy can be stronger,” Carroll told WFAN last week, via the New York Daily News. “He did it to protect his team, the club and the fans. I thought it was awesome. You got a great GM.

“You got a guy who is strong and tough and will obviously stand up and tell you exactly what is going on and take the heat and deal with it in an upfront manner. Just exactly what New Yorkers, I would think, would love.

“I don’t think he’s the one to blame. It takes time to get this thing done.”

Carroll defended Idzik’s perceived lack of personnel experience.

“He was part of the responsibility doing what we did to put this team together,” Carroll said. “We thought the world of him and he will do a great job.”

The Jets were 8-8 in 2013, Idzik’s first season on the job, but things have gone badly this year, with the quarterback he drafted—Geno Smith—being benched in favor of veteran Michael Vick.
