The team already has two solid netminders? That’s okay — just record a superhuman shutout in your NHL debut; you’ll be minding the net in no time.
Due to Alex Stalock’s injury status and the close time proximity between the two back-to-back games lined up for San Jose, the team called up AHL netminder Troy Grosenick to start against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday evening.
Forty-five shots on him later, he became the first netminder to record a 40-plus shot shutout in his NHL debut since 1996.
The Sharks took home a 2-0 victory as they left the PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, extending their record to 10-8-2 in their first twenty contests.
In comparison, the Hurricanes stretched their second losing streak of the season to three, bringing their record to 5-9-3. They’re still on the upswing after going completely winless in October, but it’s going to take some serious catching up to even be considered as a playoff contender for the 2014-2015 season.
The Sharks will now head to Buffalo on Tuesday to face off against the Sabres in their seventh consecutive road game. The Pacific Division franchise has not been home since November 6th, when they fell to division rival Vancouver Canucks 3-2.
With no confirmation as to when Stalock will be back on the ice, looks like Grosenick could be about to get the prime opportunity to prove himself.
