Not Marco Scandella, apparently.
The 24-year old Minnesota Wild defenceman, who had been a scratch due to illness earlier in the week, was proclaimed well enough to play in Sunday night’s contest against the Winnipeg Jets. He replaced Justin Faulk, who was the game’s healthy scratch.
Scandella had been one of four Wild defencemen to be placed on the team’s injury list for displaying similar health symptoms to those of Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry, who was one of two Anaheim players to be officially diagnosed with mumps at the beginning of the week. Although the disease doesn’t seem to have spread throughout the NHL entirely, it was presumed that players from the Ducks, Wild, and St. Louis Blues had all come down with the disease.
As a precaution, the Ducks were all given precautionary vaccinations; in Minnesota, it seems they’re letting players skate out again.
Maybe they really wanted to make Winnipeg nervous, which could explain why the Jets were down 3-0 until nearly the midway point in the third period. Nothing like a good mumps scare to prevent the other team’s offense from getting too close to your blue line.
Despite Scandella’s return, though, fellow defenceman Jonas Brodin is still out with symptoms, along with Christian Folin and Keith Ballard.
