Charlie Strong had his hands full when he took over the Texas Longhorns this season but the first-year head coach thinks he’s turning the corner and won’t ever be as low as it was when he took over

The first season at Texas for Charlie Strong will end with a bowl game, perhaps against former rival Texas A&M, but last month it didn’t look like that would be a reality after starting off with a 3-5 record.

Strong has since righted the ship and molded this team in his image after dismissing nine players from Mack Brown’s regime as he builds a more disciplined and dedicated roster befitting his no nonsense approach he hopes will see Texas competing for Big 12 titles and national championships in the near future.

After winning three games in a row, Strong tells ESPN’s Max Olson that another five-loss season “will never happen in this program again.”

“I told the coaching staff it’s on us,” Strong said. “We were sitting here at 3-5 and I said we should not be pleased with where we are. At the University of Texas, that will never happen that, with our [track] record, we go out and get five losses. We’re not comfortable with that.”

Texas is not comfortable with that either after Brown lost his job after losing 21 games in his final four seasons in Austin, including a 5-7 campaign in 2010. Strong went 7-6 in his first two seasons at Louisville before going 11-2 and 12-1 in his final two seasons suggesting he can take over a program, built it up and win in a big way.

The hire of Strong drew some criticism at the time, but he’s done his best to turn the critics into believers and a home win in the regular season finale on Thanksgiving night against  No. 5 TCU will go a long way toward that.
