Watson was injured early in the first quarter against Georgia Tech, his first game back since breaking a bone in his throwing hand, and fell to the ground in obvious pain and left head coach Dabo Swinney fearing the worst before receiving the good news that the MRI came back without any mention of a torn ACL that would have kept him out for the rest of the year and into spring football.
Clemson also received good news on offensive guard David Beasley and lists him as day-to-day with inflammation in his patellar tendon. He and Watson could return for the regular season finale against South Carolina.
"“We received some great news,” coach Dabo Swinney said. “Both players are not seriously injured, something we feared Saturday. They are listed as day-to-day, and their status will be evaluated later this week.”"
Watson was the top dual-threat quarterback recruit according to ESPN last year and enrolled early with the hopes of beating out Cole Stoudt for the starting job, which he did against North Carolina when he threw six touchdown passes and 435 yards in the 50-35 win.
Stoudt likely will start against Georgia State this weekend while Watson rests his ailing knee, but Clemson is hopeful Watson will be able to return for the Palmetto Bowl matchup against the rival Gamecocks and hopefully his string of bad luck with injuries is beyond him.
